About the Lodge
Since 1958
From a 1958 homestead to a one-of-a-kind lodge, Evenson Heritage Lodge remains rooted in family, art, and a deep sense of belonging.
The story of our lodge began long before it ever hosted guests. In 1958, Jim and Nedra Evenson homesteaded this land under the American Homestead Act, carving out a life surrounded by wild beauty, artistic practice, and quiet perseverance. Their son, Thor, later homesteaded the adjoining property, continuing the family’s legacy of creativity, stewardship, and deep connection to place. Together, their work laid the foundation for what would become Evenson Heritage Lodge.
What started as a single-family cabin has grown—generation by generation—into a one-of-a-kind destination for connection, restoration, and reflection.
At Evenson Heritage Lodge, every corner tells a story. It’s not just a building—it’s a living home, shaped by artists, thinkers, and caretakers who believed that place matters. And while the property has expanded over the years, its purpose has remained steady: to welcome people into something meaningful.
Today, our Kenai Alaska lodge is still owned by the Evenson family. The artwork inside isn’t for sale. The walls aren’t staged for photos. The experience here is personal, layered, and lasting—built around legacy and shared time.

Homestead to Haven
Originally just a small homestead cabin, the lodge evolved alongside the Evenson family. Over the years, as their needs grew and as more friends, neighbors, and artists came to visit, the home expanded into what it is today: a 4,500-square-foot lodge designed to feel lived-in, not commercial.
Surrounded by old-growth trees, wildflowers, and private lakes, the lodge offers a rare kind of kenai ak lodging experience—where guests feel both the roots of history and the ease of modern comfort.
It includes:
- Seven bedrooms and four bathrooms
- A full kitchen and dining room
- A cozy, art-filled living area with a wood-burning stove
- Gallery space showcasing original Evenson works
- Outdoor trails and lake access steps from the door
Evenson Heritage Lodge isn’t themed—it’s textured. The lodge is filled with original artwork from three generations of Evensons: Jim, Nedra, and their son Thor. These aren’t mass-produced prints. They’re stitched tapestries, painted canvases, and carved forms—each representing a chapter of the family’s shared creative life. The original works displayed throughout the lodge are not for sale, but prints are available for most pieces.
Visitors often say that even the stillness here feels expressive. From the way the light hits the great room to the stories behind the art, every detail contributes to the unique atmosphere.

What sets this lodge apart isn’t just its size or style—it’s the feeling of being welcomed into someone’s home. From book-lined shelves to handmade textiles, from cozy lofts to wide porches, the space is warm and human.
Jenny and Paul, the caretakers, live nearby and offer quiet, capable support when needed. They’re not staff in the traditional sense—they’re stewards of the land and the experience. Whether you have questions about the trails or want help adjusting your stay, they’re nearby—but never in the way.
Guests frequently return not just for the setting, but because of the comfort and sincerity of the welcome.
Evenson Heritage Lodge isn’t a commercial property managed for maximum turnover. It’s part of a family legacy—a space that reflects decades of care and an ongoing commitment to preservation.
Every booking supports:
- Continued stewardship of the land
- Maintenance of trails, lakes, and art collections
- Accessibility for guests seeking retreat, creativity, or reconnection
- It’s a place built to last, and to be shared—with intention.
From the beginning, art has shaped life here. That’s why the lodge has become such a natural home for residencies, writing retreats, and quiet gatherings of people doing meaningful work. Artists, musicians, authors, and wellness practitioners often comment on the ease of focus and flow here—it’s not just a beautiful backdrop; it’s a place that invites ideas forward.

Evenson Heritage Lodge sits in the heart of Alaska’s natural abundance—where wildlife encounters and quiet observation come naturally. The property offers incredible opportunities for bird-watchers and nature enthusiasts alike, with migratory species frequenting the lakes and forests throughout the year.
Bishop Lake, a salmon-spawning lake, comes alive each fall as salmon make their way up Bishop Creek to spawn—a rare and unforgettable sight just steps from the lodge. A private trail follows the creek, offering peaceful hikes through spruce and birch forest, with chances to spot moose, eagles, and other native wildlife along the way.
Nearby Marie Lake, fed entirely by rainfall, stays warmer through the summer months—making it an inviting spot for swimming, kayaking, or simply unwinding at the water’s edge. Together, these natural features create a setting where guests can experience Alaska’s wild beauty up close, without ever leaving the property.
